Artist Statement
"Ancient Rainforests – From Gondwana to the Vanua…. you may dream up visions of paintings with strange insects and animals, fauna and flora from lost worlds, lush vegetation, ferns, large leave creepers, exotic plants and massive trees with roots visible above the ground, turning and twisting and crawling along a damp forest floor – but that is exactly what this retrospective of art works is not about. These works are not about replicating visual representations of the dense temperate and tropical forests, it is rather about the things that you cannot ‘see’. The catch is in the phrase – from Gondwana to the Vanua – it is about an ancient, unknown, non-verbal, or even non-written language of a ‘webstring’ of life and energies connecting the living or more accurately ‘biophilic’ and ‘ancestral’ elements between the forests of the Otway’s in Australia and the lush forests of Vanua Levu Island in Fiji.
In essence, it is ‘memory mapping’ of a higher consciousness of when I have traversed some inaccessible areas in these rainforests, as if I were a bird of prey high up in the sky and have a view of the larger picture, the ‘everything’, the ‘wholeness’, yet – I can home in to detail and see the tiniest detail of my prey hidden in the swamps of the mangrove forest. Including is an awareness of every other detail around where my focus should be. It is a reflection on what I have ‘seen’, maybe not what you have expected, but certainly visual captions of moments of the ‘seen’ and the ‘unseen’.
In this hasty, fast-track modern world of city living and demanding lifestyles, we certainly lose the ability to ‘see’, noticing the beautiful life of other living beings around us. There is another layer not visible to the ordinary day-to-day activities of our modern humans, or shall I say the ‘ordinary consciousness’, and this hidden layer of a micro-cosmos of life, the micro-cosmos of everlasting ecosystems and inhabitants of the tiniest green patch or vegetation right outside our bedroom window or in our backyard. It does not take too much to realise that there is another realm of the natural world, and all these sentient beings in this natural world have their own language, a natural language to communicate and co-exist in an ongoing evolutionary regenerative environment.
The realisation of this environment, where there is a different connection, a webstring connecting everything together in the natural world, where there is an unspoken language, is what initiated me to embark on the explorations of the ancient rainforests started as far back as in 2020 at the Otway Forests in Victoria, Australia. It was like the forest was talking to me, and I was talking to the forest.
In this exhibition, I tried to represent and capture my experiences and how I have ‘seen’ these environments of the forests. Be assured, it is not the usual visuals of trees and forests, but the mapping of storylines of landscapes known and unknown." - Dr Phillip B. Roös (2025)

The Unfolding

Exhibition Venue:  The Papermill Gallery, 100 Lower Paper Mills Rd, Fyansford, VIC, 3218 (Papermill Gallery)
Exhibition
Dates:  Thursday 17th March 2022 – Sunday 27th March 2022
This exhibition was part of Geelong Design Week 2022, an initiative of Geelong UNESCO City of Design and the City of Greater Geelong

'The Unfolding' consists of various artworks, including drawings, paintings and large paper scrolls telling stories of the landscape in abstract representations, epitomising the inherent living structures that are visible and non-visible elements of Nature’s designs. Within the paintings and drawings are hidden narratives, which through the process of unfolding, Nature reveals its beauty. However, beauty is not only what we see, but also the inherent processes and morphological sequences of creation that make the whole and results in a feeling of belonging. Roös proposes finding solutions for our current planetary crisis in the natural order of Nature. Embedded in art, design and scientific analysis, the artists’ paintings celebrate the splendour and interconnectivity of everything in Nature, a world we must preserve.

All living creatures on earth have an innate connection to water, in fact we cannot survive without water. This deep affiliation to water heightens our sensory experiences and attachment to place, where beautiful landscapes along waterways have become human settlements since ancient times.  In this exhibition ‘Aquaphilia’, five contributors from the multidisciplinary background of architecture, landscape architecture, sculpture and fine arts – submerge themselves into the depths of their practice and produce works reflective of a 'Love of Water’.  The collection of contemporary visual and interactive artworks underpinned by the adoration for hydration, raises questions of social and environmental consciousness.

Hydro-Philos Storylines

In 'Hydro-Philos', Roös expressed his feelings, experiences and his interpretations of the various natural environments connected to water, which he immersed himself into, through his drawings, paintings and large paper scrolls. Analysing the meanings of hydrophilic and hydrophobic elements, what the innate connections are between various life forms, our place in the ecosystem and importantly our human love of water, aquaphilia.
